Chapter 17
Belle
âWhy are you smiling like that?â Samira asked me.
I quickly closed my chat screen on my computer, before she could see not only who Iâd been chatting to, but what we were chatting about.
My ears turned red at the thought she might have seen some of that conversation.
I thought I was being careful, but I had completely missed her coming up to my desk, so deeply was I immersed in our chat.
She nudged my shoulder. âWho were you talking to?â
I stalled for time. âI wasnât talking to anyone,â I said, making my eyes big and looking around to see who else might be watching.
âCome on,â Samira said, leaning in closer and lowering her voice.
âGive me the dirt! Is there a new man in your life?â
I had to give her something, so I nodded.
âWho is he?â she asked.
I had to think fast. âSomeone⦠I met in class,â I whispered.
âKick boxing?â Samira hardly ever showed up and Iâd noticed that there were always different people in the class.
âHow long has this been going on?â
âNot long,â I said with a little smile. âThe thing is⦠we kind of, have to keep it quiet.â
âWhy? Is he married?â
The thing with Samira was that she had an overactive imagination. But it came in helpfully now.
âNo⦠butâ¦â I couldnât come up with another solution quickly enough.
âHe has a girlfriend?â she supplied, again.
âYes,â I nodded, relieved. âI told him, he needs to break up with her first, but he says he canât.â I couldnât think quickly enough why not. I thought Iâd leave it to Samira to supply the answer and again, she didnât disappoint.
âWhy? Is she bipolar? Schizophrenic? Depressed? My brother dated a girl once who threatened to commit suicide every time he wanted to leave her. It was a nightmare. He almost married her!â
âItâs something like that,â I said, nodding seriously, trying not to laugh. The whole situation was ludicrous.
Behind me, there was a ping from the computer, which meant Iâd received another message. I was scared it would pop up on the screen and quickly switched the whole computer off.
âGod, I wish he would stop,â I said, pretending to be annoyed. âIâve told him I wonât see him anymore until he breaks up with her, but he keeps saying he needs more time.â
Samira nodded sympathetically.
âLetâs get coffee,â she said. The kitchen was downstairs, and we had to walk across the top floor to reach the escalator. We passed Michaelâs office and I casually glanced over to see him leaning forward on his desk, watching me with a smile.
My heart beat faster as I followed Samira down the escalator. She was telling me about her romance with Piotr.
I couldnât wait to get back to my computer to see what Michael had sent me. The past two weeks had been a blur of seeing him and coming to work and pretending not to know him at all. We chatted all the time online, and found ways of seeing each other at the office.
It started with meeting
